Giardiasis is an intestinal infection caused by a parasite called Giardia lamblia. The infection is spread through fecal-oral route and ingestion of contaminated water or food. Proper and frequent hand washing can help prevent infection. Giardiasis can also be controlled by identifying and treating infected individuals, and excluding people with diarrhea until symptoms subside. Children should be excluded from group setting is diarrhea is present. Children can participate in group settings once diarrhea has resolved.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Acute watery diarrhea
  • Excessive gas
  • Distended and painful abdomen
  • Decreased appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Signs and symptoms may not always be apparent in infected individuals
