Measles

What is it?

The measles is a very highly contagious viral disease. It is spread through direct contact with respiratory droplets. This disease is preventable through a vaccine, although outbreaks continue to occur among those who have not been protected by the vaccine. Exclude children who are infected from others.

Signs or symptoms:

  • Fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes
  • Small red spots in the mouth
  • Rash at hairline spreading downward on body
  • Diarrhea or ear infection
  • Serious complications can result in pneumonia, brain inflammation, convulsions, deafness, or mental retardation

How to control it?

  • It is recommended for children to receive the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
  • Wash hands thoroughly and frequently.
  • During measles outbreaks, exclude children that have not been immunized with the vaccine until they have received the immunization.
