Shigella is an infection that is caused by the Shigella bacteria. Symptoms typically include: watery stools with blood or mucus, fever, headache, convulsions, and abdominal pain. It is spread through fecal-oral route. If a child has the Shigella infection, he should be excluded from others until treatment in complete and test results are negative for the bacteria.

How to control it?

  • Hand washing is a great way to prevent an outbreak of Shigella.
  • Avoid shared water play areas.
  • Observance to sanitary diaper changing techniques.
  • Sanitary food handling.
  • Antibiotics can be effective and shorten the duration of diarrhea.
