Diagnosing allergies through skins test are generally safe for children of all ages. Skin Testing is extremely reliable in determining environmental or airborne allergies (dust mites, pollen, etc.) and also food allergies. In some cases, as food allergies can become complex in diagnosing, your child may require additional testing or procedures.

The most common side effects when utilizing the skin test are red, itchy bumps, that may become slightly swollen (wheals).

Helpful Info

Below are some quick pieces of information that we hope you find useful.

Did you know that we provide allergy testing for our patients?

Allergy testing consists of a skin test wherein the allergens are applied to the child's back with plastic applicators and after 15 minutes results can be read based on what is seen on the patient's skin. At this time the provider will discuss if there is any further action needed in regards to allergy management.

Allergens

All together. we can test for 72 possible allergens. including food allergens (milk. nuts, shellfish. wheat, egg. fruits. and vegetables), and also environmental allergens (pollen from trees, grasses. weed. mold, dust mites, pets - cats and dogs).

Testing Age/Appointment

It is recommended that patients must be at least 4 years old so that they are cooperative and able to lay on their bellies for the 15 minutes it takes for the allergens to be applied. This appointment is also about 60 minutes in length from check in to check out. so you should count on being with us for at least that long.

Required for allergy testing

To prepare for one of these tests, patients should stop taking ALL medications that contain antihistamines for at least the 7 days leading up to the testing, or longer would be preferred. Parents also cannot schedule an appointment without prior recommendation from an Angel Kids Pediatrics provider, meaning they have discussed allergy symptoms in a previous visit. Parents can schedule an allergy consult to discuss allergy symptoms and if indicated allergy testing can be done after the visit on the same day. However, allergy testing cannot be done together with a well visit. Parents should check with their insurance to see how the testing would be covered.
