Is Your Child Struggling Emotionally? 5 Mental Health Warning Signs to Know About

Growing up has never been easy. In today’s world, with a fast-paced lifestyle and technology everywhere, it's even harder. Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that almost one in five kids and adolescents in the United States have been diagnosed with a mental, emotional, or behavioral health condition.

At Angel Kids Pediatrics, our skilled team offers personalized, sensitive care for a full scope of behavioral, developmental, and mental health issues, in addition to customary well-child exams, same-day sick visits, and ongoing management of chronic conditions.

Getting necessary pediatric care for your child is easy at any one of our 10 offices located throughout Jacksonville, Amelia Island, and Saint Johns, Florida, as well as through our convenient telehealth appointment option.

This month, we’re delving into children’s mental health, including five possible warning signs parents should be watching out for.

Mental health issues in children

The term mental health encompasses how people of all ages think, process their feelings, and interact with the world. When a person has a mental health condition, it can affect one or more of these abilities and lead to distress or interpersonal problems.

Many of the same issues that affect adults can be seen in children, though symptoms may differ. Examples include anxiety disorders, major depression and other mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more.

Warning signs of mental health concerns

Mental health challenges come with a variety of warning signs, depending on the condition. Some of the most common indicators that parents should be aware of include:

1. Withdrawal

Withdrawal can take several forms, from avoiding friends and social interactions to not taking part in previously enjoyable activities. A child who suddenly shares less about their lives, including what’s going on at school and with their friends, is one example.

2. Poor concentration

Sometimes, mental health struggles lead to trouble focusing or concentrating, doing poorly in school, or skipping school altogether.

3. Emotional outbursts

Sudden outbursts, out-of-control behavior, and noticeable swings in mood, behavior, or personality can all point to mental health concerns that require care. Uncharacteristic fights with loved ones or other children are one common sign.

4. Lingering sadness

Suffering from persistent or recurrent feelings of sadness that last two weeks or longer can be a red flag. Other serious warning signs include a child hurting themselves or talking openly about death or suicide.

5. Changes in habits or physical complaints

Eating or sleeping more or less than usual can point to mental health struggles, as can weight loss. Some children may also get more frequent headaches or stomachaches.
